Kodama

A kodama is a spirit in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. It is believed cutting down a tree housing a kodama will cause misfortune. But seeing that as the spirit only on rare occasions reveal itself to humans, a kodama tree is typically marked by a shimenawa rope circling it.
